In the Saxon state capital, old gas lamps still provide light on the streets. Some have already been replaced - others will not.

The city of Dresden is gradually replacing the gas lights on its streets with modern LED lamps. However, exact figures on how many have already been replaced are not available, as the city announced on request.

A replacement of all gas lights is not planned, however: In the Striesen-Blasewitz, Trachau-Pieschen and Löbtau districts, the gas lights would be retained in some places for reasons of monument protection.

However, according to the city, that many gas lamps are no longer in operation anyway. There are over 48,000 street lights of various types in Dresden. As the owner, the city is directly responsible for around 46,000 lights.

Only around 1,100 of these are gas lights - and they do not light up the city center. Around 10,000 are LED lights. These would not only save a lot of energy, but would also illuminate the streets better, it said.

In comparison, there are many more gas lamps in use in Berlin: around 18,300 old gas lamps provide light on streets and sidewalks in the German capital.
