Before the start of the fall vacations in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt this weekend, the German Automobile Association (ADAC) has pointed out possible traffic jams on roads and highways caused by vacationers, day trippers and commuters. A large part of the holidaymakers will head for destinations in Germany or the Alpine countries, according to estimates of the association, the ADAC in Munich announced on Monday. In addition, for example, in Saxony-Anhalt the Monday, October 2, is free of school, so that probably many people wanted to enjoy the extended weekend including the holiday on October 3.

Particularly on the roads to the hiking regions of the Alps and low mountain ranges, as well as to the coasts, traffic jams are to be expected. Bottlenecks are also expected on the highways in metropolitan areas and at the currently about 1500 highway construction sites, it said. Above all, the highways to and from the North Sea and Baltic Sea as well as the Cologne, Hamburg and Munich metropolitan areas are affected.

The ADAC expects that large and long traffic jams will not occur on the highways of the Alpine countries, even if many weekenders are on the road in addition to quite a few autumn vacationers. The Tauern, Fernpass, Brenner, Rhine Valley and Gotthard routes are expected to be busy at times. Short waits at the border are possible when entering Germany.
