The number of respiratory infections continues to rise in Saxony. After the turn of the year, significantly more cases of influenza and RSV infections were registered again, according to the first report of the State Investigation Institute (LUA) 2024 published on Friday. According to the report, 221 deaths in connection with a Sars-CoV-2 infection have also been reported since the beginning of October 2023. These were people between the ages of 39 and 98. One woman and two men between the ages of 64 and 78 died as a result of an influenza infection, as well as a 78-year-old with an RSV infection.

According to the LUA report, the number of influenza cases rose by two thirds compared to the previous week. Young children, primary school children and young adults continue to be particularly affected. At 66 percent, there was a significant increase in the first week of 2024 in detections of RSV infections, which mainly affect infants and young children.

The reports of Sars-CoV-2 cases, especially in older people, stagnated at the previous week's level, according to the data. According to the LUA, almost 27,300 coronavirus cases have been detected since the start of the current 2023/24 flu season - as well as around 2,340 cases of influenza and over 1,690 cases of RSV.
