Flu epidemic in Saxony: peak exceeded

The peak of the flu epidemic has also passed in Saxony. In the last week of February, significantly fewer cases of influenza, RSV and SARS-CoV-2 infections were reported, according to the latest report from the State Investigation Institute (LUA) on Friday. The number of influenza cases fell "considerably" by 38 percent compared to the previous week, with 735 cases reported, and there was also a significant drop of a good quarter in RSV-related respiratory diseases (respiratory syncytial virus). The number of reported coronavirus infections was 23 percent lower than the previous week.

According to the LUA, influenza infections occur in all age groups, adolescents and young adults. RSV infections, on the other hand, mainly affect infants and young children and coronavirus infections particularly affect older people.

Since the start of the current flu season in October 2023, 361 deaths have been recorded in connection with a Sars-CoV-2 infection. These were people between the ages of 39 and 99. In addition, 85 influenza deaths between the ages of 11 and 96 were reported, as well as eight women and four men between the ages of 71 and 99 who died from an RSV infection. According to the LUA, a total of 25,544 coronavirus cases have been reported to date - as well as more than 19,412 cases of influenza and a good 6053 cases of RSV.
