The winter vacations have slowed down the flu epidemic in Saxony. Although the number of respiratory infections is falling slightly, it is still at a high level.

The health authorities in Saxony have recently registered slightly fewer respiratory illnesses than before in the wake of the flu epidemic. The State Investigation Institute mainly reported cases of influenza for the second week of the winter holidays. With 4,142 new cases, a good 500 fewer were reported than in the previous week, a decrease of 11 percent. All age groups are affected, but there is a high proportion of schoolchildren and older adults who have fallen ill.

In the case of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) infections, there was a slight increase of 581 cases, or 0.7 percent. This continues to mainly affect young children.

The number of reported coronavirus infections, which dominated until the end of 2024, also increased again by 110 cases (2%) compared to the previous week. Older adults and senior citizens were particularly affected.

Tens of thousands of cases and over 300 deaths in total

From the beginning of October last year until 2 March, 35,247 cases of influenza were registered nationwide, as well as 14,977 coronavirus infections and 4,236 RSV infections, according to the State Investigation Institute. 303 people died after contracting one of these diseases.

209 people between the ages of 46 and 97 died from a Sars-CoV-2 infection, 91 people between the ages of 8 and 98 from influenza and 3 women between the ages of 75 and 92 from an RSV infection.
