Tourism in Saxony is growing. According to a recent study by the East German Savings Banks Association (OSV), the demand level of 2019 has almost been reached again. According to the latest Savings Banks Tourism Barometer, the number of overnight stays in commercial establishments in the first half of 2024 was only 1.7 percent below the same period in the year before the coronavirus pandemic, with the months of March and May even exceeding this figure.
Increase in overnight stays compared to the same period last year
The number of overnight stays in commercial establishments rose by 2.6% to 9.19 million compared to the first half of 2023. This exceeds the increase in demand in
eastern Germany (2.2 percent) and also nationwide (2.1 percent).
According to the tourism barometer, the eastern regions of the Free State in particular contributed to the positive result, "the large cities are once again becoming the engine of growth".
However, the mood in the hospitality industry in spring and summer is gloomy, according to the data. In particular, rising costs for energy, raw materials and wages, a shortage of skilled workers, excessive bureaucracy or the uncertain political framework as well as weak domestic demand are hampering investment.
