The fire department in the district of Meißen has received new vehicles to strengthen its forest firefighting efforts. Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) handed over five new fire engines and a command vehicle in Moritzburg Castle Park, according to the ministry. Schuster said that this was part of a commitment made after the forest fires in Saxon Switzerland. "The new vehicles mean a significant strengthening of our forces in fighting forest fires and increase the safety of our comrades."
According to the information provided, the vehicles can also be used off-road outside of paved roads. Fully loaded, they can move across dry and wet meadows as well as sandy ground. In the course of the year, the district of Saxon-Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains and the Ore Mountains district will also receive vehicles after Meißen. The three new units will be set up for forest fire protection in the districts of Görlitz, Bautzen and North Saxony in addition to the specialized disaster control units.
