People in Leipzig must be prepared for traffic restrictions in the coming days. The reason for this is the Minister Presidents' Conference (MPK), which begins in the trade fair city on Wednesday evening, according to the police. Accordingly, corresponding security measures will also have an impact on the population. In addition, the preliminary round of the Champions League soccer match between RB Leipzig and Liverpool FC will take place on Wednesday evening.
The Free State of Bavaria took over the chairmanship of the MPK from Hesse at the beginning of October. The kick-off event will take place in Leipzig up to and including Friday. According to the police, extensive protective and traffic measures are required for this, which will particularly affect the districts of Zentrum, Zentrum-Nordwest (Zoo) and Altlindenau.
Local transport also affected
In addition to short-term and temporary traffic closures, local public transport and private transport are particularly affected. Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) will not be able to run buses or streetcars in the area of the Congress Hall (Zoo) at certain times. These restrictions apply on Thursday from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm and on Friday from 7.30 am to 4.00 pm.
Support forces from several federal states on duty
Those traveling by car will also have to take detour. Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to only use the pedestrian and cycle path at the Zoo parking garage. The zoo will remain open as usual during the MPK. In addition, the flying of drones and other flying objects in the vicinity of the event venue is prohibited.
During the major event, the Leipzig police will be supported by the Saxon riot police and task forces from Berlin, Saxony-Anhalt, North Rhine-Westphalia and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
