CDU votes on coalition agreement and Bundestag candidates

The Saxon CDU/CSU will vote on the coalition agreement to form a minority government with the SPD in Dresden on Saturday (10.00). 240 Christian Democrats have been invited to the special party conference. The 110-page agreement has been negotiated since mid-November and was presented at the beginning of December. The SPD is allowing its members to vote by postal ballot. The result should be known on Monday.

In the state elections on September 1, the CDU was the strongest party in Saxony with 31.9 percent of the vote, ahead of the AfD (30.6 percent). As the CDU categorically ruled out an alliance with the AfD and the Left Party, the only option for a majority government was an alliance between the CDU, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) and the SPD. However, the so-called Brombeer coalition failed during the exploratory phase.

Kretschmer depends on the cooperation of other parliamentary groups

The CDU and SPD are ten votes short of an absolute majority in the state parliament. The election of CDU incumbent Michael Kretschmer as Minister President next Wednesday is also dependent on the cooperation of other parliamentary groups. If Kretschmer does not receive the required 61 votes, a second round of voting will be necessary. A simple majority of yes votes will then suffice.

In the afternoon, the special party conference will be followed by a state representatives' meeting with 200 participants. It will decide on the Saxon CDU's state list for the early elections to the Bundestag. Carsten Körber from the Zwickau district association is in first place on the list. He has been a member of the Bundestag since 2013 and heads the CDU state group in Saxony.
