The Dresden SC volleyball players have reached the next round of the European CEV Cup. Coach Alexander Waibl's team won the second leg at SSC Palmberg Schwerin 3:1 (16:25, 25:22, 25:21, 25:20) on Tuesday evening. After the Elbe club had already won the first leg 3:0, winning two sets was enough for the visitors to progress.
The Dresden side went into the game with a major handicap, as regular libero Aleksandra Jegdic had to withdraw due to a feverish infection. She was replaced by 18-year-old Lotte Goertz. In the first set, the team from the city on the Elbe seemed completely unsettled and nervous, were unable to find any rhythm at all and made many easy mistakes.
However, the tide turned in the second set. Waibl's team stabilized their attacking game, served with pressure and Sarah Straube was now able to use her attackers in a variety of ways. Diagonal attacker Grace Frohling in particular improved significantly. Led by captain Jennifer Janiska, Dresden put in a strong performance before Frohling added the final point. The six-time German champions were thus through to the next round. It was DSC's 13th success in a row in all competitions. The two teams will face each other again at the same venue in a Bundesliga fixture on Saturday.
