Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht criticizes the Left for abolishing school grades

The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) considers the Left in Bavaria to be out of touch with the world due to a decision on education policy. Specifically, it concerns a passage in the election manifesto according to which both school grades and head grades should be abolished. "We in the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance can only shake our heads at such unworldly ideas. And if any proof was needed as to why a separation from the left was so urgently needed, then this is it," explained BSW leader Sabine Zimmermann on Monday. The abolition of school grades has nothing to do with shaping a good education policy for all.

"The SPD, Left and Greens have been on the wrong track in education policy for years, just like the CDU: while some dream of abolishing school grades, the CDU refuses to take a clear view of the fact that education is increasingly becoming a question of the purse strings in Germany," emphasized Zimmermann. A sensible and fair education policy in the center would focus on clear competencies and values, relieve teachers of non-subject-related tasks and ensure that no one is disadvantaged because of their background and that talent is optimally promoted.

The amendment to abolish school grades was tabled by the Left Youth at the Left Party conference in Bautzen on Saturday and received a narrow majority. One of the reasons given was that grades are "neither fair, meaningful nor constructive and at best cause enormous pressure". Every teacher would award grades differently. Instead, grades should be replaced by reports on learning development.
