Greens see untapped potential for cycling

The Greens in the Saxon state parliament believe that cycling in the Free State of Saxony could be greatly expanded. The potential is currently not being fully exploited, explained MP Gerhard Liebscher. His party has worked hard to achieve the progress that has been made, but is still far from satisfied.

"I am particularly annoyed by the sluggish expansion of cycle paths. Instead of prioritizing cycle path planning due to the enormous backlog demand in Saxony, the responsible minister remains unambitious to the end," explained Liebscher in the direction of Transport Minister Martin Dulig (SPD).

Every extra euro for cycling had to be fought for. Without federal funding, things would look bleak. Added to this is the CDU Ministry of Finance with its "fundamental obstructionist mentality".

Greens announce cycling offensive in new legislative period

"In order to change this, we Greens want to launch a cycling offensive in the coming legislative period - with more funding and a reduction in bureaucracy for the significantly faster expansion of safe cycle paths. The aim is to have a seamless and safe cycle path network by 2032," emphasized Liebscher. In particular, the aim is to support local authorities with more extensive cycling funding so that the projects now planned can be implemented in a timely manner.

The German Cyclists' Federation (ADFC) gave a sobering assessment of cycling on Wednesday. Nine of the 18 cycling targets set out in the coalition agreement had not been met and six had only been partially met.

The ADFC had also examined the programs of the parties for the state elections on 1 September for "cycling suitability". The Left, Greens, SPD and BSW scored best. In contrast, the club still saw a lot of room for improvement with the CDU, AfD and FDP. Cycling played no role at all for the Free Voters, it said.
