Several activists are demonstrating at Leipzig/Halle Airport for more climate protection. This was confirmed by the Leipzig police on request. The police did not initially say how many people were involved or whether restrictions on air traffic were to be expected. According to the airport's website, the first morning flight was scheduled to take off at 5.25 am, with the first arrival expected at 9.10 am.
The "Last Generation" group claimed responsibility for the disruption. According to them, climate activists entered the airport grounds at around midnight. They wanted to make a statement on the tarmac against increasing air traffic, the airport's inadequate climate strategy and the lack of a plan by the German government to rapidly phase out fossil fuels.
A post by the group on Platform X reads: "Freight traffic is particularly affected by today's blockade - the night flight ban is being suspended for this." The post was accompanied by photos showing activists on the tarmac, in at least one case with their hands glued to the ground. Their signs read: "Oil kills". According to the group "Oil Kills", a total of five activists were stuck on the tarmac.
