Modern battery-powered trains should have been running between Leipzig and Chemnitz long ago. There are serious problems with the replacement trains that have been hired instead. Can rail passengers hope for a remedy?

After numerous problems with replacement trains on the Leipzig-Dresden railroad line, the Central Saxony Transport Association is calling for rapid remedial action. The situation since the timetable change is unsatisfactory, it said in a statement. There have been complaints about train cancellations, delays and technical problems with carriage doors and toilets. VMS Managing Director Mathias Korda warned that he expected the greatest possible efforts from all those involved to return to a stable service.

Waiting for modern battery-powered trains

Chemnitz is expecting a large number of national and international guests this year as European Capital of Culture. The route to Leipzig is an important connection to Deutsche Bahn's long-distance services. It is also used by many commuters. In the past, however, the use of old GDR carriages caused problems and complaints. Modern battery-powered trains were supposed to provide a remedy, but their delivery has been delayed.

The manufacturer Alstom has therefore rented double-decker trains as a replacement. However, they often cause problems. At a top-level meeting with all parties involved, steps have now been discussed to rectify the problems. It was reportedly agreed that a mobile maintenance team would be deployed to avoid train failures and delays. In addition, the employees of Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn, which operates the RE 6 line, are to receive further training. Individual relief trains were also agreed to run on the Chemnitz-Riesa-Leipzig line during rush hour.
