The Federal Ministry of Economics has expressed its disappointment at the closure of solar module manufacturer Meyer Burger's plant in Saxony. "The news from Freiberg is depressing," explained Parliamentary State Secretary Michael Kellner on Tuesday. He added that they were aware of the very serious situation facing German solar companies and were in regular and intensive contact with the industry, particularly with companies producing in eastern Germany.
The company Meyer Burger had sealed the final closure of its site in Freiberg, Saxony. The approximately 500 employees were given their notice. The company has been complaining for some time about competition from cheap modules from China. The decision was preceded by Finance Minister Christian Lindner's (FDP) rejection of the so-called resilience bonus, which was intended to protect manufacturers under pressure in Europe.
Green politician Kellner said: "It is very regrettable that this is not going to happen now. Even if not everything has been negotiated yet, the coalition partner's skepticism is unfortunately still too great." They will not let up and will campaign for other funding opportunities at EU level.
According to the ministry, the German government is using various instruments and levers to strengthen production capacities in Germany and Europe. In particular, there is leeway in European state aid law.
