The destroyed section of Dresden's Carola Bridge had two steel joints. One of the components, weighing several tons, has been recovered from the Elbe, but there is no trace of the other.

The whereabouts of the missing component of Dresden's Carola Bridge remain unknown. It was also not found during a sounding in the river by the Elbe Water and Shipping Authority (WSA) on Tuesday. According to the town hall, this revealed that the steel component, which weighs several tons, is not an obstacle in the riverbed for the possible passage of ships. If the steel joint is in the edge area, it is not detected by the measurement technology used, said Karsten Wild from the WSA. This only sends vertical signals downwards, which detect the zone directly below.

City administration: search continues

According to the city administration, the missing component will now be searched for from the Neustadt side or at low tide as part of the demolition work on the destroyed bridge section C. The necessary construction road is currently being built there, while the demolition from the old town side is "so far complete".

The western traffic section of the Carola Bridge collapsed unexpectedly on the night of 11 September 2024 over a length of around 100 meters. Since then, the rest of the reinforced concrete structure from the GDR era has been closed and shipping has been interrupted. The White Fleet operates downstream and upstream from the closed section with limited capacity, and inland navigation has to take a break.
