The expansion of wind energy in Saxony has long been more hesitant than in other federal states. This was also the case in 2023.

Saxony continues to lag behind other federal states in terms of wind power expansion. Together with Bavaria, Thuringia and Baden-Württemberg, the Free State is one of the states with the lowest capacity additions in 2023, the German Wind Energy Association and the VDMA Power System Association announced on Tuesday.

The bottom line is that 37 megawatts of installed capacity were added in Saxony last year. Ten new wind turbines with a total output of 47 megawatts were erected and 15 turbines with 9 megawatts were dismantled. In comparison, the front-runner Schleswig-Holstein achieved an expansion increase of 1109 megawatts. In Thuringia, 32 megawatts were added, in Bavaria 23 and in Baden-Württemberg 52.

According to the industry associations, the net additions nationwide amounted to 3033 megawatts. This means that 28,677 wind turbines with a total output of 61,010 megawatts are currently in operation in Germany. The industry associations have long complained about a north-south divide; fewer turbines are being erected in the southern federal states than in the north.
