The Thomas Müntzer Primary School in Schkeuditz, north of Leipzig, wants to score points at this year's German School Award with its unique concept. "The judges already visited us on April 8 and 9 and were very impressed by our concept in terms of the school community, integration and the involvement of the school zoo," head teacher Elke Koller told the German Press Agency.

At the "green school with school zoo", primary school pupils learn how to treat pets responsibly, look after the animals with their teachers and two animal keepers, feed them, help muck out the stables or build small huts for their pheasants and ducks in craft lessons. More than 250 animals and 45 different species live here at the school zoo, which will be 70 years old next year.

At the end of March, the Saxon Ministry of Culture announced that two Saxon schools were in the next round of the competition for the German School Award 2024. In addition to Thomas Müntzer Primary School, Geschwister Scholl Primary School in Leipzig was also nominated. The award ceremony with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is scheduled to take place in Berlin on October 2. The focus will be on the quality of teaching and the question of how schools organize teaching and learning for their pupils. A total of 20 schools from all over Germany are in the running.

The German School Award is the most highly endowed award for schools in Germany. The main prize is endowed with 100,000 euros, five further school prizes with 30,000 euros each. The Robert Bosch Stiftung has been awarding the German School Award together with the Heidehof Foundation since 2006.
