The number of animals slaughtered in Thuringia continues to fall. Last year, around 266,000 animals were killed in the state, around five percent fewer than in 2022, according to the State Statistical Office on Friday. Last year, 44,028 tons of meat were produced from the slaughtered animals. The slaughter volume thus decreased by 3046 tons or 6.5 percent compared to the previous year.
This means that the number of animals slaughtered fell for the seventh year in a row, according to the report. The biggest decline in terms of numbers was in the number of cattle slaughtered: 86,475 animals were killed for consumption in 2023 - 8,259 cattle or 8.7 percent fewer than in 2022. 172,517 pigs were also slaughtered in Thuringia in 2023. This was 6,354 fewer than in 2022 and represents a decrease of 3.6 percent. In contrast, the number of sheep slaughtered increased by 11.9 percent to 6429 animals.
According to the statisticians, most of the slaughtering in 2023 was commercial (96.2 percent). There were 10,105 domestic slaughterings in Thuringia last year. Their number therefore only decreased slightly.
