Cycling as many distances as possible for 21 days - that's what the city cycling campaign is all about. Leipzig narrowly misses out on a place on the national podium.

Leipzig took fourth place in this year's nationwide city cycling competition. The approximately 19,000 participants cycled almost 3.4 million kilometers over 21 days, according to the campaign organizers. Nationwide, only Berlin, the Hanover region and Munich were ahead of the trade fair city. Saxony's state capital Dresden took 28th place with just under 1.5 million kilometers.

Last year, Leipzig took third place among major cities with over 500,000 inhabitants. Leipzig residents cycled more than 3.5 million kilometers during the campaign period last year. Leipzig has been taking part regularly since 2009.

The aim of the campaign is for people to cycle as many distances as possible for 21 days. The aim is to raise awareness of cycling as an environmentally friendly form of transportation. If the municipality in which you live participates, you can take part in the city cycling campaign. The kilometers cycled are recorded. Every year, prizes are awarded to winning municipalities in various categories.

A total of 2,886 municipalities are now taking part in city cycling. In Saxony, 18 municipalities took part this year. This is more than last year (11), but rather few compared to other federal states.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, which is similar in size to the Free State, 124 municipalities took part this year. In the neighboring state of Saxony-Anhalt, there were 31 municipalities and in Thuringia 36.
