Saxony's municipalities are changing. With support from the federal and state governments, historic old towns have been renovated, existing districts modernized and new quarters created.

Saxony's municipalities will receive 142.3 million euros in urban development funding from the federal and state governments this year. According to the regional development ministry in Dresden, exactly 100 towns and municipalities are benefiting from the funding. They are investing in the preservation and revitalization of town centers or historic old towns. However, projects for social cohesion in urban and rural districts or for coping with economic and demographic change are also financially supported.

According to the ministry, a total of around 6.2 billion euros has been invested in the further development of Saxon towns and municipalities since 1991. This support has helped to save historic city centers, revitalize brownfield sites and remedy social problems in municipalities. The aim is to revitalize districts, neighbourhoods and city centers and turn them into sustainable residential areas.
