The Deutschlandticket is still valid - but for how long? Funding beyond 2025 is unclear. While the Federal Union is keeping a low profile, Saxony's transport minister is pushing for a continuation.

Saxony's Transport Minister Regina Kraushaar (CDU) has spoken out in favor of the continuation of the Deutschlandticket. "We want the Deutschlandticket to be continued and for the federal government to contribute at least half of the funding in the long term," Kraushaar told the German Press Agency. The CDU and SPD had expressly agreed on this in the coalition agreement for the current legislative period.

"Our municipal authorities rightly expect a clear perspective on the continuation of the Deutschlandticket," emphasized Kraushaar. This requires "a reliable funding commitment from the federal government as quickly as possible".

Funding remains controversial

Bavaria's Minister President Markus Söder (CSU) also believes that the federal government has a responsibility. "The ticket is not called the Bavaria or Bremen ticket. It's called the Deutschlandticket," he told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND). The federal government must therefore find a solution for its continuation. Söder expressed confidence that a solution would be found under a CDU/CSU-led federal government.

At the beginning of the week, Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU) had already called for a change of course in terms of funding. "It was a feat of strength for the federal states to get the federal government to keep its funding promises for the Deutschlandticket," explained Bernreiter. While the ticket was secured for 2025, the next federal government would have to decide on the long-term future.

The Germany Ticket does not feature in the CDU/CSU's election manifesto. Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz (CDU) said in November when asked how he saw the future of the ticket after 2025: "That is a very difficult question, which we will also have to answer in light of next year's budget plans."

Wissing warns against liquidation

Union budget holder Christian Haase recently told the portal "Politico": "We have to be honest with ourselves: Beyond 2025, the Deutschlandticket can no longer be financed."

Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (non-party) warned against the end of the Deutschlandticket. That would be fatal, Wissing told the Phoenix channel. "We have modernized public transport with the Deutschlandticket, we have driven forward the digitalization of public transport and, above all, we have relieved the working middle class."
