1.5 million people are infected with HIV every year. There are also new diagnoses in Saxony.

In Saxony, 120 people were newly diagnosed with HIV last year. In total, around 3,100 people in Saxony are living with an HIV infection, according to the Ministry of Social Affairs, citing figures from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). There is an urgent need to continue to focus on prevention, ensure access to treatment and guarantee medical care across the board.

"Every person with HIV has the right to effective treatment, to a life without discrimination and to support from society," said Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD), according to the statement. World AIDS Day on 1 December calls on us to rethink the issue and acknowledge the progress made in treatment. At the same time, the stigmatization that still exists and the inequalities in access to medical care need to be addressed.

An estimated 40 million people worldwide are living with HIV. Despite significant progress in prevention and treatment, 1.5 million people are still newly infected every year. Many millions of people have no access to vital therapies. Access to healthcare services and antiretroviral drugs is severely restricted, particularly in the countries of the Global South.
