Flu epidemic in Saxony nearing its end - LUA reports decline in the number of respiratory infections reported

Faced with a further decline in the number of reported respiratory infections, the State Investigation Institute (LUA) believes the flu epidemic in Saxony is coming to an end. According to the latest report published by the Ministry of Social Affairs on Friday, the number of reported cases of influenza, but also coronavirus and RSV-related respiratory diseases (respiratory syncytial virus) continued to fall in the second week of March. Influenza was down by just under ten percent, coronavirus by seven percent and RSV by two percent.

According to the LUA, influenza cases continue to occur in all age groups, with only fewer cases being registered among under-one-year-olds, adolescents and young adults. RSV infections, on the other hand, mainly affect infants and young children, while coronavirus infections particularly affect older people.

Since the start of the current season in October 2023, 366 deaths have been registered in connection with a Sars-CoV-2 infection. These were people between the ages of 39 and 99. In addition, 107 influenza deaths between the ages of 11 and 96 were reported, as well as nine women and five men between the ages of 71 and 99 who died from an RSV infection. To date, a total of almost 25,660 coronavirus cases have been reported, with almost 20,340 cases of influenza and around 6,500 cases of RSV confirmed.
