The population of Dresden hardly changed last year. On December 31, 2024, around 574,000 people had their main residence there, according to the city. This was around 1,400 more inhabitants than in the previous year - an increase of 0.2 percent.
The slight increase resulted from a so-called migration surplus of around 3,000 people: According to preliminary data from the population register, around 31,000 people moved to Dresden in 2024 and 28,000 left the city on the Elbe.
The number of births fell to 4,106. The last time the figure was this low was in 1999. However, the continuing decline in births since 2017 has slowed compared to previous years (2023: 4,268 and 2022: 4,740). The number of deaths also fell in 2024. However, at 5,816, it was significantly higher than the number of births.
The proportion of foreigners was 12.5 percent, reaching a new high (2023: 12 percent). At the end of the year, 71,878 people without a German passport were registered in Dresden, most of them with Ukrainian (9,919 people) and Syrian citizenship (7,301). At the same time, the number of residents with a German passport fell by just over 2,000 compared to the previous year to 501,770 in 2024. The decline thus continued, according to the press release.
