Despite falling freight rates, aircraft noise at Leipzig Airport remains a hotly debated topic. Some citizens are taking a particularly creative approach - with self-built monitoring systems.

According to the Aircraft Noise Commission (FLK), night-time aircraft noise at Leipzig/Halle Airport was slightly lower than in the same period last year. This was due to fewer aircraft movements in cargo traffic, according to Jörg Puchmüller, the Aircraft Noise Protection Officer (FLSB). However, Leipzig/Halle Airport reported a further increase in passenger numbers with a slight decrease in freight traffic compared to the previous year.

New FLK members

On Wednesday, the members of the Aircraft Noise Commission (FLK) met for their autumn meeting in Schkeuditz. For the first time, representatives from the new member municipalities of Krostitz and Jesewitz, appointed by the Ministry of Transport, also took part.

Puchmüller also presented the measurement data from Delitzsch and Eilenburg, where local authorities and citizens' initiatives had requested corresponding studies. At both locations, the values were below the limits for passive noise protection.

Some complaints distort the picture of noise pollution

According to this, the complaint situation has not changed significantly in terms of the number of residents complaining about aircraft noise. According to Puchmüller, there were two complainants who automatically submitted hundreds of individual complaints. One man is said to have built his own monitoring system that automatically sends a complaint email when a certain noise level is exceeded. Such cases could lead to a distorted picture of the situation, said Puchmüller.

Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) presented the results of the latest FLK audit. It was examined whether the departure procedure from the southern runway to the north could be shifted further to the east during eastern operations in order to relieve the corridor between Krostitz and Delitzsch without creating additional stress on the ground. Criticism came from representatives of the district of North Saxony and the municipalities of Krostitz and Jesewitz. The FLK then called on DFS to submit additional studies.
