In Saxony, almost 4,000 applications for a so-called "chance residence" were submitted in the first half of 2023. It allows long-time tolerated foreigners the chance of a right to stay in Germany. As can be seen from an answer published on Wednesday by the Ministry of the Interior to a small question by Left Party politician Juliane Nagel, at least 3814 applications were submitted. From the district of Saxon Switzerland / Osterzgebirge, however, no information was available.

According to the ministry, between 5000 and 7000 people in Saxony are entitled to a chance residence permit for 18 months. During this period, they can prove that they meet the requirements for a permanent right to stay. The city of Leipzig has by far the most applications, twice as many as in some districts. At the end of June, 85 percent of the applications on which decisions had already been made had been approved. However, 2556 procedures are still in the processing.

"The processing backlog must be resolved - to do so, the foreigners authorities must be better staffed," Nagel explained. The claim of the chance right of abode may not be delayed. Protection seekers would have to get certainty instead of being put off. "There must be an end to throwing out well-integrated people." Reason dictated that people who have lived in Saxony for many years be granted a secure stay.
