Citing a dramatic situation, Saxon CDU politician Marko Schiemann has called for more decisive action by the federal government against organized crime in illegal border crossings into Germany. The increased number of 100 detected smugglings per day is associated with a threefold number of undetected crossings, he told the German Press Agency on Friday. "The current situation on the border with the Czech Republic and Poland is like a cheese with holes in it, with which smuggling gangs earn billions."
At least 800 additional federal police officers would have to be seconded to the German-Polish border so that the police would be able to increase the search pressure on the smugglers. At the same time, he warned the federal government against putting the good relationship with the Republic of Poland and the Czech Republic at risk through its lack of action, Schiemann said.
The Free State is already sending more police to its borders to deal with the sharp increase in smuggling. State police and federal police are working closely together - existing joint search teams are being targeted for checks - openly or undercover with plainclothes officers.
