Taxes must be paid on inheritances and gifts that exceed the tax-free amount. Last year, 12 million euros more was due than in 2022.

Saxony collected 81.1 million euros in taxes from inheritances and gifts last year. This was around 12 million euros more than in 2022, according to figures from the State Statistical Office. In 2023, 69.1 million euros in taxes were due for inheritances and 11.9 million euros for gifts.

A total of 624 million euros was left behind in almost 2,400 tax-relevant inheritance cases, according to the State Statistical Office. More than a third (39 percent) of this was accounted for by bank deposits, around a quarter (26 percent) by real estate and 18 percent by securities. In addition, liabilities amounting to 83.1 million euros were left behind. After taking into account the statutory allowances, more than 3,600 heirs paid tax on a total of 313 million euros.

More than 550 people were liable to pay tax as a result of gifts. After deducting the allowances, 71 million euros were subject to tax.
