Saxon municipalities are to receive around 129 million in funding for urban development by 2031. The cabinet approved a corresponding federal-state agreement, paving the way for the funds. "If we take a look at our cities and municipalities in the Free State, we can see that Since reunification, they have undergone impressive positive changes - also in terms of their appearance," said Infrastructure Minister Regina Kraushaar.
According to the CDU politician, around 6.5 billion euros have been spent on remedying urban development problems since 1991. 250 municipalities in the Free State had already benefited from this. "This funding enables local authorities to improve the quality of life for their citizens in a variety of ways. This starts with the renovation of buildings, extends to the redesign of city and town centers and the expansion of open spaces and playgrounds, as well as the utilization of inner-local brownfield sites."
Landtag still has to approve state share of programme
As in the previous two years, the federal government had pledged funds totalling 790 million euros for urban development funding in 2025. Around 64.5 million euros of this will be allocated to Saxony. Around 64.5 million euros have also been earmarked in the Saxon government's draft budget to co-finance these federal funds. This share still has to be approved by the state parliament. The funding will be disbursed under the "Vibrant Centers", "Social Cohesion" and "Growth and Sustainable Renewal" programmes.
