After a drop in the Elbe water level, demolition work on the Carola Bridge in Dresden has picked up speed again. According to the city, excavators have been working on the Old Town side of the Elbe since Monday to remove the bridge sections via a specially constructed construction road. Previously, work had to be interrupted for four days due to higher water levels.
The western section of bridge C, which includes streetcar tracks and a cycle path, suddenly collapsed over a length of around 100 meters on the night of 11 September. A few days later, the removal of the first debris began. Since the beginning of October, the controlled dismantling of section C, which is part of the closed, formerly important inner-city traffic artery, has been underway.
A recently submitted expert opinion confirmed that the remaining parts of the Elbe crossing must also be demolished. Sections A and B are also at acute risk of collapse and are severely damaged by stress corrosion - the same cause that experts identified for the collapse of section C. Until the controlled dismantling, these sections may no longer be loaded for safety reasons.
