After the attack at the Christmas market, handball in Magdeburg is taking a break. The derby against Eisenach will not take place until 2025.

Following the attack in Magdeburg, the Handball Bundesliga (HBL) has postponed the derby scheduled for Sunday between German champions SC Magdeburg and ThSV Eisenach. Magdeburg had previously submitted an application to the HBL to postpone the game, which was granted by the association. It has not yet been decided whether the home game against HC Erlangen scheduled for December 26 can be played.

"Yesterday's terrible events, which claimed numerous victims and injured people, fill us with deep sorrow and sympathy. Out of respect for those affected and their families, we have decided to request that the match be postponed. In such a difficult time, we would like to show our solidarity and sympathy," said SC Magdeburg.

Handball League recommends minute's silence

The German Handball League has also recommended that all clubs commemorate the victims with a minute's silence before their upcoming matches between December 21 and 27. "This is intended to send a joint signal against the inhumane attack in Magdeburg and for peaceful coexistence," wrote the association.
