A total of 145 newly hatched chicks have been abandoned in Leipzig. The police collected the animals after a tip-off and brought them to the Leipzig animal shelter. They are now being nursed back to health there with warmth, water and food, according to the head of the shelter.
Last Friday morning, the chicks were discovered in a field near a shooting range north of Leipzig, where police reported temperatures of around six degrees. "The conditions were life-threatening for the animals because they do not yet have a protective plumage," explained the head of the Leipzig animal shelter, Michael Sperlich.
Now the network is being activated to give the chicks a slaughter-free perspective. In this context, Sperlich spoke of "unspeakable factory farming", which must be abolished immediately.
The Leipzig police department had initially investigated the violation of the Animal Welfare Act. "After consultation with the public prosecutor's office, however, the case is an administrative offense under the Animal Welfare Act," said police spokeswoman Sandra Freitag. The owner is also known to the investigators. The North Saxony District Office is now responsible.
