After the actually already expected decision of the world's leading Taiwanese chip company TSMC to build a semiconductor factory in Dresden, the industry network Silicon Saxony sees Saxony's role as a hotspot for the chip industry strengthened. "With the settlement of TSMC, Saxony's reputation as a European center of semiconductor high technology will be strengthened worldwide. TSMC's commitment will attract further international companies and, above all, further skilled workers," emphasized Dirk Röhrborn, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Silicon Saxony.
In this context, Saxony is also positioning itself as the preferred location for the headquarters of the design company to be founded by industry giants such as Bosch, Infineon, Nordic Semiconductor, NXP Semiconductors and Qualcomm.
TSMC recently unveiled its ambitious plans to build a semiconductor factory in Dresden, the capital of Saxony. Investment is expected to top the ten billion euro mark - around five billion of which is to be co-financed by the federal government. The forward-looking plant will be realized in close cooperation with technology giants Bosch, Infineon and NXP, each of which will hold a ten percent stake in the joint venture. TSMC dominates with a 70 percent share. According to the announcement, around 2000 highly qualified jobs will be created. The target for the start of production is in 2027.
