The public prosecutor's office in Dresden is working with the police to investigate whether the partial collapse of the Carola Bridge has a criminal background. Citizens have filed complaints against the building mayor Stephan Kühn and unknown persons, including damage to property and endangering the building. The charges are being investigated for their criminal relevance.
Parts still lying in the Elbe
A section of the Carola Bridge, which crossed the Elbe near Dresden's Old Town, collapsed a week ago. No one was injured. The bridge section on which the streetcar ran as well as a footpath and cycle path was affected. Other parts of this bridge on the Neustadt side were brought down in a controlled manner and the riverbank area was cleared of the demolished parts.
The section that originally collapsed and another concrete section are still lying in the Elbe. They can only be removed once the flood waters have subsided. According to the Road and Civil Engineering Office, a concept for the demolition is in progress.
