Free State funds National Hydrogen Center in Chemnitz

Saxony is providing around 15 million euros from the state budget until 2028 for the establishment of the National Hydrogen Center (HIC) in Chemnitz. The Free State is thus supporting the project in addition to the federal funding that has been promised. On behalf of the cabinet, an administrative agreement will be concluded with the Federal Ministry of Transport for the future funding of the Hydrogen Innovation Center, as announced by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Dresden on Tuesday. The HIC is one of four locations that together will form the future Federal Innovation and Technology Center for Hydrogen (ITZ). They are to be developed in such a way that they will be self-sustaining on the market in the long term.

The concept for the HIC was developed by the Hydrogen Cluster HZwo Chemnitz association. It focuses on the development of hydrogen-based drive systems for the automotive industry, logistics sector and local public transport.

The Free State of Saxony is doing its part "to ensure that a world-class national center can be created in the industrial heart of Saxony," said Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Dulig (SPD). The ITZ location Chemnitz could support the small and medium-sized suppliers that are severely affected by structural change, train skilled workers and make the region more visible for international settlements. "We need the expertise from Chemnitz to decarbonize heavy goods transport, because hydrogen trucks, buses and commercial vehicles will soon be shaping our streetscape."
