The health department of the district of Görlitz warns against swimming in the Quitzdorf reservoir due to blue-green algae. "Particularly sensitive or endangered persons as well as infants and children are strongly advised against swimming", the Görlitz district office announced. Dogs and other warm-blooded animals are also at risk. The results of a water sample taken on Friday showed that there is currently a strong development of blue-green algae.
If you still go into the water, you should avoid areas with visible streaks and be careful not to swallow any water. If symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, skin irritation or wheals occur after bathing, a doctor should be consulted immediately and the Görlitz district health department informed. The health authority points out that the toxic effect can increase if water containing algae is swallowed for several days in a row.
Blue-green algae occur in stagnant water, especially in the summer months when water temperatures are high. A bluish-greenish turbidity of the water and streaking are signs of the presence of the bacteria.
