Closed due to overcrowding: The city of Dresden has had to close the registration portal for this year's cleaning of the Elbe meadows due to overcrowding. With 2,000 participants, the maximum capacity limit has been reached, the city announced. "Additional helpers can no longer be active on site, as the protected nature and wildlife must not be put under too much strain during the cleaning campaign."
Those who have already registered can start and finish the campaign individually in their area of operation on April 5 between 9 a.m. and 12 noon, it said. Collected waste and smaller pieces of wood should be placed on the edge of the Elbe cycle path by 12 noon at the latest. The city administration will then have them collected and disposed of.
Elbe meadows in Dresden are a popular recreational area
In Dresden, it was decided back in the 19th century to keep the Elbe meadows permanently free of buildings. The areas also serve as a flood retention area. For the local population, the meadows, which extend into the city center, are a popular place for recreation and relaxation. In a recent survey on what they particularly like about the city, more than half of the residents named the Elbe meadows.
The annual spring clean is also very popular in Leipzig
The spring clean is also very popular in Leipzig. Under the motto "Leipzig is cleaning up", the city council called for people to come together from March 21 to April 14 to clear public areas of garbage. So far, more than 40 initiatives with many hundreds of participants have already registered, the city explained. Last year, more than 1,100 people took part in the campaign. They collected a good 100 cubic meters of garbage.
