A pedestrian bridge on the edge of Chemnitz city park has been closed for structural reasons. During the annual inspection, damage to the supporting structure and the cross bracing was discovered, according to the city. The condition of the structure had deteriorated considerably over time.
The bridge, which was built in 1964, crosses the Chemnitz river at the end of Rößlerstraße into the city park and connects the districts of Altchemnitz and Kapellenberg. According to the city, it no longer meets the requirements for a pedestrian and cycle bridge. The width is too narrow and the two piers in the river restrict the flow cross-section.
New replacement already in planning
Instead of renovation, the city is planning a new replacement that meets the current requirements for pedestrian and cycle bridges. The design planning is reportedly already being finalized and preparations for construction are set to begin this year.
No connection with Dresden's Carola Bridge
According to the information provided, there is no connection between the closure and the partial collapse of Dresden's Carola Bridge. Neither the structural design nor the damage pattern match. Part of the prestressed concrete bridge in the heart of the state capital collapsed into the Elbe last September. The cause is thought to be so-called stress corrosion cracking, which is triggered by moisture. Two other bridges of a similar design were subsequently closed: the Elbe bridge in Bad Schandau and a bridge on the B 101 in the south of Großenhain (district of Meißen).
