Foiling can still be practiced on waters in Saxony, pilot project to be continued.

The sport of foiling can continue to be practiced on Saxony's waters. A pilot project that began in 2023 will be continued permanently, the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced on Thursday. This means that athletes can use the designated surfing areas with their foils - special boards with a large fin on the underside.

Wind and wing foiling as well as SUP foiling are permitted all year round. "Kite foiling and e-foiling are also regarded as technological forms of their sports," said the ministry. Originally, foiling was banned in Saxony. However, following protests from surfers, a legally secure solution was sought.

The pilot project last year was a success, the ministry announced. Neither accidents nor nature conservation-related damage were reported. With the permanent continuation of the project, further data is now to be collected. The findings are to be incorporated into the planned revision of the Saxon shipping regulations.
