The Saxon metropolis of Leipzig counted more tourists last year than ever before. In 2024, more than two million guests traveled to the trade fair city for the first time, according to the Leipzig Region Tourism Association, citing figures from the State Statistical Office. The number of overnight stays rose to 3.8 million.
In addition to cultural and city travelers, business travelers also played a significant role in the growth. According to the figures, the European Football Championship, which included matches in Leipzig, was a particular factor in the growth. The tournament attracted numerous international guests, particularly from the Netherlands, Austria and Italy.
Leipzig exceeds pre-corona level
By once again exceeding the pre-corona level of 2019, Leipzig is consolidating its position as an important tourist center in Saxony. Compared to 2019, the number of overnight stays rose by 6 percent. The average room occupancy rate in hotels with at least 25 rooms was 64.5 percent - compared to 63.2 percent in 2023.
By comparison, the number of overnight stays in the state capital of Dresden fell by 1.5 percent compared to 2019. Nevertheless, the total number of overnight stays there in 2024 was still higher than in Leipzig at around 4.6 million.
Optimistic forecast for 2025
The Leipzig Tourism Association is also expecting a strong year in 2025. Sporting events such as the International German Gymnastics Festival and cultural highlights such as the Book Fair or the Bach Festival should attract more guests to the city.
